Backdrop

Backdrop is an installation that investigates the formal relationship between painting and sculpture and man’s efforts to control the forces of nature. It explores the fragility of the built environment when forces outside of our control threaten to destroy the foundation we have built upon. It will combine sculptural representations of natural elements such as rocks, with a large-scale painted representation of the built environment presented as a backdrop. This “backdrop” provides both a setting for an event or situation to occur while at the same time suggesting that something disastrous has already happened, creating a repeating narrative that echos man’s endless struggle with nature.
